GARY ALLAN was on "Larry King Now" . . . and he got sucked into the debate about today's country music being too pop when he was asked if TAYLOR SWIFT and CARRIE UNDERWOOD are country.
He said, quote, "I would say no. They're pop artists making a living in the country genre. I also feel like we lost our genre. I don't feel like I make [the same] music I did, ten, fifteen years ago."
His point being that the genre has changed so much that, to stay relevant, he and everyone else had to change with it. Country is now a blend of several musical styles . . . and he's okay with that.
He said, quote, "There's enough room in it for me, a country artist who leans towards rock, for pop sounding country artists, as well as more traditional sounding country artists. None of us are the same, but we all make country radio our home."
The conversation got way more interesting when it turned to the politics of country music . . . and the perception that everyone's a right wing conservative. His answer to that was, quote, "Definitely not true. I see both sides that I talk to.
"You've got your super conservative people and you've your ultra liberal out there. I'm on the liberal side. I'm not super conservative."
He was also asked if there could ever be a gay country star, and he didn't back off from that either. He said, quote, "I'm sure there's been a few. I know of them but they've just never been public.
"Any blip that I've ever seen about people I know, it's instantly covered up. I don't want to out anybody."
