It doesn't matter to me that he didn't write country hits. The songs he wrote became part of the soundtrack of my life and I felt his passing should be mentioned here. JJ Cale was a singer, songwriter and producer who was considered an influence to many of the greats. His manager says Cale died of a heart attack at a California hospital on Friday. He was 74.

Eric Clapton had hits with Cale's tunes "After Midnight" and "Cocaine" — and Lynyrd Skynyrd took Cale's "Call Me The Breeze" and made it a rock classic. Cale was once asked if it bothered him that few people knew he crafted some of the biggest hits of the rock era. He said with a laugh "no" — but added "what's really nice is when you get a check in the mail."
Some say Cale made a career of "sounding like Clapton." Fact is, Clapton and the rest have done well for themselves trying to sound like JJ Cale. R.I.P...
