Nearly half of the food produced on earth ends up in the trash.
The U.K.’s Institute of Mechanical Engineers estimates that between 1.3 billion and 2.2 billion tons of the 4.4 billion tons of food produced each year “never reaches a human stomach.”
There are all kinds of reasons: from perfectly edible food being rejected by stores because they don’t meet cosmetic standards to over strict sell-by dates.
Americans' love of couponing doesn’t help much either. We end up buying multiples of products, and the perishable ones end up in the trash too.
In third-world and developing countries poor harvesting and storage add to the problem.
To top it all off….we waste some 550 billion cubic meters of water on crops that end up in the trash.
