I started in radio in 1974 at a small daytime station, WBER, in Moncks Corner SC. I worked as a combo man...selling advertising in the morning and on air during the afternoon. I came to WEZL on June 1st 1977 and have been here ever since. I began working weekends, just Friday and Saturday on the air, while selling spots Monday through Friday. Then I was on the air during afternoon drive from 3pm to 7pm while selling spots in the morning. Then I went full time inside doing mid-day from 10am to 3pm plus the duties of production director. Then I was moved to mornings with Charlie "Byrd" Lindsey from 6am to 10am and in 1991 began working with TJ Phillips in morning drive. We've been doing the morning show together since then, with the exception of a couple of years when he "went fishing" in Colorado. My biggest joy in life is my family. My wife, Darlene, works at the Robert Bosch Corporation. We've been married over 40 years and we have two sons, Shane and David, one grandson, Gavin and one granddaughter, Mary Grace. My oldest son Shane worked here at WEZL while he was in high school, then got his own sports talk show for a few years. He also was the play by play radio announcer for the Baltimore Orioles single A farm club in Salisbury Maryland. After his son was born he got tired of the road and decided to move back to Summerville. He now lives in Summerville. He is in sales here at Clear Channel. David, our youngest, graduated from The Citadel in 2002. He played baseball and was the starting shortstop for them from 1999-2002. When he graduated, he played some pro ball in Evansville Indiana before coming back to Summerville. He is now a fireman for the city of Charleston and is currently training for an Iron Man Competition. He lives with his wife Melissa and their great danes "Zeelee" and "Bella" in North Charleston. Melissa is a district manager for East Shore Fitness. Darlene and I live in Summerville with our rescue dog "Orson", a Golden Shepard. We lost our miniature schnauzer "Scooter" due to a serious illness on Friday March 19, 2010. His brother "Scottie" passed away on June 30th 2007 after a bout with cancer. We loved them very much and they will always be missed terribly. In the picture below, Scottie is on the left and Scooter is on the right. One of our "granddogs", Zeelee, is the dane with her toy bat in her mouth. Awesome Orson is of course the one with the ball.
A Few of My Favorite Places on the Web
  • Charleston Animal Society
As you probably already know, Tuesday morning on WEZL is one of my favorite times...that's when Kay Hyman with the Charleston Animal Society stops by with a dog or a cat that is up for adoption. Well, sometimes it's a rabbit, or a ferret, a rooster, or a pony. Believe it or not, we have had all of those animals, and more up for adoption on WEZL. I am a huge lover of animals, dogs being my favorite, and everytime we are able to help one find a home and leave the shelter, it makes me feel great. Of course the CAS is always needing help...
whether it's donations, or volunteers, or foster homes for animals...they can always use your help. Check out their website...I'm sure you'll find some way that you can help if you want to get involved. Be sure to listen each Tuesday morning at 8:15...maybe the animal that is looking for a home, is just the one you've been looking for.
Here's the website...visit it if you have a minute...

    Sea Island Habitat for Humanity
I had the privilege of working with Sea Island Habitat For Humanity when WEZL built a home with them in 2005. What a great organization!
I really believe that Habitat for Humanity is one of the best organizations around for helping people. There are many Habitat programs in the area...all working for the same cause..."eliminating poverty housing and homelessness", and I like working with Sea Island Habitat on John's Island, since that is where we did the WEZL build. If you enjoy working with your hands, even if you have no experience, Sea Island Habitat For Humanity would love to have you volunteer.
It's not just construction either...there are many, many ways to help them. Visit them at www.seaislandhabitat.org  for all the info on the outstanding work that they do, and how you can get involved. It will be a blessing to you!

    Healing Farm Ministries
I recently met with a group of people that are doing some great work with the developmentally disabled. It is an organization call Healing Farm Ministries and it is located at Thornhill Farm on Hwy. 17 in McClellenville. This is actually a workingfarm where those that are developmentally disabled can come and work with flowers, plants and vegetables in the garden. They can spend time with the animals at the farm...right now a cow, 4 donkeys, a bunch of chickens and some geese. There is a huge pond on the property where they can fish, plus just lots of room to run and play! It gives them a chance to really enjoy the outdoors with their family and loved ones.
Visit their website at www.healingfarm.org to find out more about this wonderful place.
