The fifth annual Low Country Jazz Festival will kick off Labor Day weekend this year with a hot tribute to horns, performed by a new collaboration of popular smooth jazz veterans. Saxophonists Dave Koz, Richard Elliot, Gerald Albright and Mindi Abair will take the stage with their own arrangements of smash hits made famous by the horns bands of the 70s: Earth, Wind & Fire; Blood, Sweat & Tears; Chicago and others.
The heat will continue the second day of the festival when guitarist Stanley Clarke and keyboardist George Duke try to out duel each other on stage. Over the course of their funk-filled and genre-smashing collaborations, Clarke and Duke have created performances full of fun, energy and exceptional musicianship. Low Country Jazz Festival audiences can expect more of the same fantastic musical roller-coaster ride on the CLARKE/DUKE 4 “BRING IT” tour.
The festival will conclude with the cool pairing of jazz pianist Joe Sample and vocalist Randy Crawford. Sample, a founding member of the influential jazz funk combo The Crusaders (originally the Jazz Crusaders) and a pioneer of contemporary jazz piano has been an integral, innovative and bestselling part of jazz history. Crawford, perhaps best known in the U.S. for her performance with The Crusaders on the transatlantic hit “Street Life,” has had multiple top five hits in the UK. She and Sample have a long history of live performances together.
Additional artists are still being confirmed for the festival as well as final plans for a Sunday brunch, artist meet ‘n’ greet event and late night jam sessions. The festival, named a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Society, draws thousands of jazz fans to Charleston and raises funds to benefit Closing the Gap in Health Care, Inc., an organization whose mission is to decrease health disparities among the underserved.
